Cats nails need to be cut regularly and if unchecked they can overgrow and pierce the pad which could lead to infection. A cats nail is made up of the hard cuticle outer layer and a softer inner lining layer called quick. Just like humans a cats nails continually grow.
If you are new to cutting cats nails it is best to consult with your vet to learn the best technique as you do not want to harm your cat. Only the tip of the nail should be cut if you cut to deep you could cut into the quick causing pain to your cat. Should you cut to deep and blood is spurting out call you vet for help.
Good pet shops sell specially made cat claw clippers, but you can use a sharp pair of nail clipper also.
